Scaling Complex Academic Concepts for Asynchronous Online Learning

As the lead designer for this flagship asynchronous course, a joint venture from the University of Alberta and The Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution (CSEE), I oversaw the visual presentation, video production framework, and media strategy from start to finish. The course is also available ion Coursera, and has 4.8 stars.

The program was designed to unpack complex, multi-faceted energy concepts for a broad audience through clear narrative structuring and high-production-value video assets.

Key Production & Design Highlights

  • Lead Design & Course Strategy: Managed the overall visual identity and media framework across all modules, establishing consistent design patterns to make high-level academic content digestible and engaging.

  • Studio Video Production: Directed and recorded studio video sessions featuring the primary instructor and 5 guest lecturers utilizing a teleprompter setup to capture natural, seamless presentations.

  • Post-Production & Motion Graphics: Executed extensive video editing and animated motion graphic packages—including custom lower thirds, title cards, section transitions, and ending credits—to ensure a polished, broadcast-quality finish.

  • Explanatory Diagrams & Visual Aids: Designed dozens of custom diagrams and technical illustrations aimed at breaking down dense scientific, economic, and technical frameworks into intuitive visual explainers.
